An efficient data warehouse solution for health care frontrunners

A data warehouse solution deployed for the Joint Authority of the Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District by several actors helps to transform data from various source systems into a reportable format. The new, more efficient reporting supports HUS Helsinki University Hospital’s role as a frontrunner and guides its decision-making and resource allocation in changing circumstances.

Productivity Leap was involved in deploying HUS’ sizeable data warehouse solution, which collects and transforms data from several source systems into a reportable format. The solution, which is rather advanced for the industry, was deployed in a Microsoft Azure environment.

Conceptual data modelling created using the Ellie tool and the automatic data storage tool WhereScape both played key roles in the overall solution. The deployment of HUS’ data storage solution is being expanded again, with work currently under way on the transfer of data from HUS’ new patient information system (Apotti) to the data warehouse.

“The purpose of the data warehouse solution is to collect data from our organisation’s several different source systems and transform it into a reportable format. The available data is utilised in HUS’ decision-making and day-to-day management. Monitoring data for operations and finances are also important to HUS’ owners, its member municipalities. The comprehensive reporting helps to obtain useful information about finances and operations. In this way, we can ensure that the quality of our operations is high and that we achieve our goals,” explains HUS’ Development Manager Elina Ahde.

“Leap’s specialists are adept at making decisions and solving problems even in demanding situations. They have a solid understanding of a large organisation’s challenging set of systems, large volumes of data, and rapid changes in operating environment, such as the reporting needs arising from the Covid-19 epidemic.”

A solution that lasts

Data warehouse planning favoured options to ensure a durable solution that allows for flexible changes in the future.

“Changes in source systems often affect other systems and reporting. That’s why scalability and the system’s ability to adapt to changes are important features in a data warehouse solution. An advanced data warehouse solution suits HUS’ values. It is important to us to operate as a frontrunner and to increase digital data,” says Ahde.

Reliable collaboration

HUS began to collaborate with Leap a year ago, in autumn. Ahde has had a positive experience of the collaboration.

“Leap’s specialists are adept at making decisions and solving problems even in demanding situations. They have a solid understanding of the data volumes in a large organisation, and of demanding and diverse reporting. In addition, they have a high level of commitment, and because of that it’s been a joy to collaborate on this project with them,” says Ahde, who is satisfied with the cooperation.

When creating the data warehouse, plenty of thought went into data classification, extraction and transformation into a format that is suitable for reporting.

“An organisation like ours is legally obliged to carry out reporting. Data must be accurate and rapidly available for reporting. Reporting on the availability of treatment for patients, patients’ access to treatment, and patient safety is absolutely essential in order to ensure high-quality service provision and that treatment is available when it’s needed,” says HUS’ Planning Manager Merja Mäkitalo.

“We have plenty of trust in the competence and skill of Leap’s professionals. They use certified methods and are committed to our values.”

Mäkitalo says that the extent of the project required expertise and an active approach to development work from Leap’s specialists.

You need expertise when taking complex data into a planning system. We have plenty of trust in the competence and skill of Leap’s professionals. They use certified methods and are committed to our values. Development work with Leap has been quick and agile,” says Mäkitalo in praise.
